Mary Louise Kane Obituary

Age 79, of Scott Township, on Sunday, December 13, 2020, passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Beloved wife of the late Robert Patrick Kane of 56 years. Loving mother of Karen (Joe) Figura, Robin (Chip) O'Neill, and Danielle (Pat) Camp. Grammie of Morgan (Mike) Ruffing, JR Figura, Kailey O’Neill, Casey O’Neill, Connor O’Neill, Austin Camp, Delaney Camp and Marie Camp. Great-grammie of Madeline Kay Ruffing. Sister of James (Kathy) Byrnes and John Dennis Byrnes. Mary Lou will be sadly missed by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Lou was a well-known figure in the Scott Township community. For nearly 20 years, she ran the concession stand at Scott Pool, where every order came with a friendly smile.  She also volunteered at the local polling station and could be seen marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade with her fellow sisters of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. On Lindsay Road, her yard to many was the “gateway” to Scott Park, especially on the 4th of July when she would host a firework viewing party for family and friends.

Mary Lou was the perfect conversationalist. She asked questions, listened carefully, and remembered even the smallest details about those she encountered. Those lucky enough to sit next to her on a plane or to stand in line near her came away feeling like they had a new friend.  And at her home, Mary Lou welcomed everyone. Lunch conversations often turned into dinner conversations and beyond. Guests enjoyed her delicious apple pies, Texas sheet cakes, and huge assortment of Christmas cookies, but stayed because of her.

Most important for Mary Lou was family. Her two brothers moved to Kansas and Chicago, but the three remained close friends for life, sharing holiday visits and weekly check-in telephone calls. With her husband Bob, Mary Lou raised their three daughters, all with her fierce strength and all with her gift of gab. Mary Lou also was especially fond of her special moments with her 8 grand-children and her great grandchild. She loved close snuggles and playing whatever they wanted to play with her—as long as she got her hugs and kisses. She will be greatly missed.
